BIO
Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland; Steven “King” Tutt started exploring his interest in music with a drum set at the age of 8. He continued studying music and playing the drums throughout his primary and secondary education years. He took classes in music theory and learned to read and write sheet music. It was clear to everyone who knew him that he was on a serious path to becoming a trained musician.
Growing up in the late 80’s Tutt was influenced by the hip hop culture and much like a lot of city kids, craved a set of turntables. “I told myself that one day I would get
a set of those tables. I didn’t know a thing about mixing and didn’t even know anyone who was a DJ” said Tutt.
It wasn’t until his father passed away in 1995 that King Tutt received some money that he finally was able to purchase a set of turntables and a mixer. “I just wanted to take something bad and turn it into something positive”. He bought his first set of tables and knowing absolutely nothing about mixing, set off on a mission to learn.
In 1996 he got his first dj gig at Skateland Orchard in Towson, MD. While at
Skateland, King Tutt began perfecting his craft and entertaining large crowds on a nightly basis. Now that he was a working dj Tutt started developing relationships and making
connections with other figures in the local nightlife.
King Tutt wanted to do more now as an established dj. While working at Skateland, Tutt began wanting to explore his creativity and musical background even more. In 1998 Tutt went to the local music equipment store and began purchasing recording and production equipment. King Tutt then realized that he could both dj and produce. That was a great way to become a powerhouse figure in the music scene in Baltimore. So while djing at night Tutt would record and produce during the day.
King Tutt worked at Skateland until 2000 when he went to work for Inner City Records.
It was there that he met “The Godfather of Baltimore Club”, DJ Scottie B. Tutt and
Scottie developed a close working relationship and Scottie took Tutt under his wing,
teaching him everything and anything that he could. When asked about his
relationship with Scottie recently Tutt summed it up with: “I am so grateful for
Scottie. I learned so much from him”.
In 2002 Tutt got his first taste of success on a large scale with the release of his hits
“Show My Thong” and “Back of the Acc”. As a lifelong student of music he continued
studying and trying to learn from those that went before him. It worked. In 2007
King Tutt was voted “Best Club Music Producer” by the City Paper of Baltimore.
Today Tutt remains as humble as he was the day he started. He says he is “focused
on making and playing good music and also putting a light on Baltimore. Whatever that may take I’m ready. I’m like, let’s go! Let’s do it!”
In 2007 Tutt signed with Unruly Records releasing “The Evolution EP” which was a top seller on many of the major internet download sites. Also along with the two owners of Unruly Records, Shawn Ceaser and Scottie B, they formed a group known as The Chavy Boys. While in this group several other projects were released.
King Tutt was now highly known throughout the dance music scene in Baltimore and major parts of the country with the success of the projects.
For several years Tutt continued to work as a dj and producer, performing in clubs in nightclubs all around the United States and remixing various artists for major labels such as Def Jam and Sony.
In 2010 King Tutt joined the Mix syndicate djs, being introduced by good friends Dj Booman and Dj Trakklaya. This allowed Tutt to connect with many other members from around the world.
In 2012 Tutt and several other producers from Baltimore formed a label, Music Motives Entertainment, focusing on releasing talent from the Baltimore area.
In 2014 Tutt joined the roster for DTLR Radio and currently has a mixshow every Saturday called “The Saturday Rewind”.
With many accomplishments that King Tutt has made over his career he has never given up on the main goal of bringing people good music.
This is just the beginning of the reign of King Tutt. There is much more to come.
